What does each tier actually buy you?

The three tiers are genuinely different builds rather than the same list at three prices, and the difference is concentrated rather than spread evenly.

The beginner build optimises for the lowest total cost to a working signal chain. Every item on it is real and everything you need is present, including the parts people forget. Its ceiling is that the monitors are small, the microphone is a single general-purpose choice, and the treatment is a first pass rather than a plan.

The intermediate build is the buy-once tier and it is the one most people should have bought first. The money goes into the microphone, the monitors and the room, because those three are what actually determine whether a recording translates. Almost none of it goes into new categories of equipment.

The expert build is the performance ceiling. It is also the tier that most readers should not buy, and the expert build page says who plainly. If the room is a spare bedroom with an 8 foot ceiling, a $769 microphone will faithfully capture that spare bedroom.

The purchase order that has served me and everyone I have advised: treatment for the corners first, then headphones, then the interface and microphone together, then monitors last. That order feels wrong because monitors are the exciting purchase, and it is right because monitors are the purchase most dependent on everything else being in place. A good pair of monitors in an untreated room is an expensive way to hear the room. The same money spent on corner absorption plus a cheaper pair gives you a more honest reference.

Why treatment deserves a fifth of the budget

Because it is the only line item that changes what every other line item does. A microphone captures the source plus the room, in one file, permanently. Monitors reproduce the mix plus what the room does to it. The interface and the headphones are the only parts of the chain that the room does not touch.

Building panels yourself from bare rigid mineral wool board roughly halves the cost of the same acoustic performance, at about an hour of work per panel. If the budget is genuinely tight, this is where the savings are, not in the interface.

Interface prices have converged so completely at the low end that the converter is rarely what limits a home recording. What the calculator does not price

  • The computer. Assumed to exist. Anything from the last five or six years with 16 GB of RAM will run a modest session comfortably.
  • The DAW. Most interfaces ship with a usable one, and several excellent options are free. This is the easiest line to zero out.
  • Instruments. A different purchase with a different logic, covered elsewhere.
