The thing I would tell anyone starting now, and the thing that took me far too long to internalise: the room is not a variable you can leave for later, because it is baked into every microphone recording you make in it. A mix decision can be revisited. A vocal take recorded in a boxy room has that boxiness in the file forever, and no plugin removes it cleanly because it is not a layer, it is part of the same waveform as the voice.

That you have a computer, that you are working in a room that was built for living in rather than for recording, and that the budget is finite. Every recommendation here is written for a real spare room with a doorway, a window and an 8 foot ceiling, not for a purpose-built control room.

What is the correct order to set up a home studio?
Face the short wall, get on the room centre line, set the listening position to about 38 percent of the room length from the front wall, set the listening triangle with tweeters at ear height, set the monitor distance from the wall, and only then treat the room. Every step before the last one is free, and treatment placed around badly positioned monitors treats the wrong reflection points.
What is the most common mistake in home recording?
Treating the room as an afterthought. A microphone captures the source plus the room in one file, permanently, and monitors reproduce the mix plus whatever the room does to it. The interface and the headphones are the only parts of the chain the room does not touch. Spending the budget on gear and the leftovers on the room reverses the actual order of importance.
What level should I record at?
Peaks around minus 12 to minus 6 dBFS and an average around minus 18 dBFS RMS. Minus 18 dBFS is the digital equivalent of 0 VU on analogue gear, which is the level every analogue-modelled plugin is calibrated to expect. Set the gain from the loudest phrase the performer will actually sing, not from a spoken sound check, which is where most ruined takes come from.
Can you get professional results in a home studio?
Yes for most sources, with two honest caveats. A treated home room can record vocals, guitars, keys, bass and programmed drums to a releasable standard, and a great many records are made exactly that way. What a home room cannot easily do is a full acoustic drum kit or a live ensemble, because both need volume the room and the neighbours cannot support.
Should I mix on headphones or monitors?
Both, and the disagreements between them carry the information. Monitors tell you what the mix does in a room, with the room included whether you want it or not. Headphones remove the room entirely, which is where reverb tails, depth and small edit errors become obvious. If you can only have one and the room is bad, start with headphones.
How long does it take to learn home recording?
You can make a usable recording on day one, and the learning curve after that is mostly about hearing rather than about equipment. The specific skills that take time are recognising what a room is doing to a sound, setting gain from a performance rather than a test, and knowing when a mix problem is a mix problem rather than an arrangement problem. All three come from repetition.
