Home Recording Comparisons: The Decisions That Actually Matter

Model against model, once the category is settled

The eight comparisons above settle which kind of thing to buy. These twenty settle which one, which is the question people are actually searching when they have already decided.

Interfaces. Scarlett Solo against the 2i2 is a question about whether you will ever record two things at once, and the honest answer is usually yes. The 2i2 against a MOTU M2 trades a software bundle for real metering, the Audient iD4 against the Solo is about the JFET instrument input, and the UMC22 against an AudioBox 96 is the budget floor.

Microphones. The SM7B against a Rode PodMic and the SM7B against an MV7+ both come back to the same practical problem: the SM7B needs far more gain than most interfaces supply, which is also what a Cloudlifter against a FetHead exists to solve. The SM58 against an SM57 is a grille, not a microphone. The NT1 against an AT2020 and a Blue Yeti against an MV7+ are both really questions about how much of your room you want in the recording.

Monitoring. HS5 against Rokit 5 is flat against flattering, and flat wins for mixing. M50x against DT 770 Pro and HD 600 against DT 990 Pro cover closed and open backs, and isolation pads against stands is mostly a question about tweeter height.

The room, and the things that do not do what the packaging says. Mineral wool against rigid fibreglass is a handling decision more than an acoustic one. Foam bass traps against broadband panels and mass loaded vinyl against door seals both say plainly that the cheap product marketed as a fix is not one, and a reflection filter against room treatment says the same about a vocal shield. So does Mogami against a budget XLR cable: a working balanced cable does not change the sound, and what you pay for is connectors and service life. And for controllers, the MPK Mini against a Keystation 49 is pads against playable keys.

Why some of these keep being argued

Three of the category comparisons are genuinely close and five are not, and it is worth knowing which is which before you spend time on them.

Genuinely close: monitor size, sample rate, and USB versus Thunderbolt. In each case the right answer depends on something specific about your situation, and someone arguing the other side is not necessarily wrong. Read those three pages properly.

Not close: treatment versus soundproofing, foam versus mineral wool, and interface versus USB microphone. Those three have a clear technical answer and the disagreement usually comes from a misunderstanding rather than from a different priority. Foam at 125 Hz absorbs about 10 percent of what hits it while 2 inch mineral wool absorbs about 20 percent and a gapped 2 inch panel about 35 percent, and no amount of preference changes those coefficients.

The comparison that costs people the most money is treatment versus soundproofing, and it costs them money in both directions. Half of them buy foam expecting the neighbours to stop complaining, which never happens because absorption does not add mass. The other half assume the room cannot be improved without construction, so they never hang anything, and they spend years mixing against a reference that is lying to them about the bass. Both of those are the same misunderstanding pointed in opposite directions.

Frequently asked questions

Condenser or dynamic microphone for a home studio?

A condenser if the room is quiet and has some treatment, a dynamic if it does not. A condenser is more sensitive and resolves more detail, and it resolves the room along with the source. A dynamic with a tight cardioid pattern rejects reflections in a way no condenser can, which is why an SM7B is the standard answer for a voice recorded in an untreated space.

Open back or closed back headphones?

Both, for different jobs. Closed back for tracking, because isolation is what stops a click track bleeding into an open microphone two feet away. Open back for mixing, because the soundstage is far more honest about depth and reverb tails. If you can only have one pair and you mostly record, buy closed back and check mixes on something else.

Are 5 inch or 8 inch studio monitors better for a small room?

Five inch, unless the room is at least about 11 by 13 feet with corner treatment already installed. An 8 inch monitor reproduces low frequencies a small room cannot support evenly, so what you hear at the desk is the modal peaks and nulls rather than the mix. Mixes made on that reference translate worse than mixes made on smaller monitors in the same room.

Is acoustic treatment the same as soundproofing?

No, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in home recording. Treatment changes what happens to sound inside the room using absorption. Soundproofing stops sound crossing a boundary and needs mass, decoupling and airtightness. A fabric panel provides none of the second set, which is why foam on a wall does nothing whatsoever for a neighbour.

Does USB or Thunderbolt matter for an audio interface?

For under about eight channels, not much. USB-C has ample bandwidth for a home studio channel count, and the round trip difference is a few milliseconds attributable to driver design rather than to the bus itself. Thunderbolt earns its place at high channel counts and where onboard DSP processing needs the lowest possible round trip, which is a specific rather than general benefit.

What sample rate should I record at?

48 kHz for almost everything. It captures content up to 24 kHz, which is above the top of human hearing, and it is the standard for anything with video attached. Use 44.1 kHz only if you are delivering to CD. Reach for 96 kHz only when a specific plugin or an extreme pitch-shift workflow needs it, because it roughly doubles processing load and disk usage.
