Why that matters here and not on most sites

Almost every gear site on the internet is written by people who have researched the subject rather than practised it. That is not a moral failing and it is often the only honest option, but it produces a specific kind of writing: technically correct, thin on the parts that only become visible after you have done the thing several hundred times.

This site is the exception in that respect and it is deliberate. The workflow, acoustics and signal-flow guidance here comes from someone who records and mixes for a living, in a home room, under the same constraints the reader has. When a page says that setting gain from a spoken sound check is how takes get ruined, that is not a rule copied out of a manual. It is a mistake made enough times to become a habit not to make.

That last row is the important one. Nobody has bench-tested forty audio interfaces for a website, and any site telling you it has is telling you a story. What can honestly be said about gear is what the specifications say, what the physics implies, and what a large number of owners consistently report. That is what is here, and it is labelled as such on every article.

Why the room comes first on every page

Because it is the only part of the chain that is permanent. A microphone captures the source plus the room, in one file, and no plugin separates them cleanly afterward because they are not layers, they are the same waveform. Monitors reproduce your mix plus whatever the room does to it, so every decision you make at the desk is made against a reference the room is editing.

The interface and the headphones are the only two parts of the chain the room does not touch. Which is why every build on this site allocates 15 to 25 percent of its total to acoustic treatment, and why the build cost calculator flags it when yours falls short. It is the least satisfying purchase in a studio and the one with the largest effect.

The single change that most improved my own recordings was not a microphone. It was straddling the two front corners of the room with the thickest absorption that would physically fit, and then discovering that a low end I had spent years fighting with EQ was the room ringing rather than anything in the recordings. What a practitioner knows that research does not surface

It is worth being concrete about this rather than gesturing at it, because "written by someone who does it" is a claim anybody can make. Here are four things that appear repeatedly across this site and that essentially never appear in researched gear writing, because none of them show up in a specification sheet.

Gain is set from the loudest phrase, not from a sound check. A singer says "check one two" at conversational volume, you set the level so that reads healthy, and then they perform and hit you with 10 or 12 dB more. Every engineer learns this by losing a take. The fix is to ask for the loudest line in the song before touching the preamp, which costs thirty seconds and is the single most valuable habit in tracking. This is why the gain staging calculator asks for source loudness rather than assuming a category.

The desk is a mirror. Monitors sitting flat on a desktop send a reflection off the work surface that arrives a couple of milliseconds behind the direct sound, which comb filters straight through the low mids where vocals and guitars live. It reads as boxiness, it is not in the recording, and no EQ move fixes it because you are correcting for something that is being added after the speaker. Lifting the tweeters above the desk plane removes it. That is why every build on this site includes monitor isolation as a line item rather than as an accessory.

Headphone bleed shows up on the quiet parts, not the loud ones. A click track at a comfortable level during a chorus is a click track at a very loud relative level during a whispered verse, and it will be sitting in the condenser two feet away. The bleed is inaudible when you record it and obvious when you solo the verse in the mix. This is the whole practical argument for closed back headphones while tracking, and it is why the headphone comparison treats isolation as a tracking feature rather than a comfort preference.

The room affects the performance, not just the recording. A singer in a room with a harsh flutter echo hears themselves badly and sings more carefully as a result. Put a panel behind them and the same person delivers a more committed take on the same equipment. That effect is real, it is not measurable on a spec sheet, and it is a large part of why the treatment argument on this site is made as forcefully as it is.

Two consequences of that worth being explicit about. First, a product with no reliable listing gets a scoped Amazon search link rather than a fabricated product code, because sending you to the wrong item earns nothing and costs trust. Second, several pages here actively recommend spending less: the interface roundup says converter quality has converged and you should buy the cheap one, and the expert build has a section titled who should not buy it. Those recommendations cost us money and they are the reason the rest of the site is worth reading.

How the numbers on this site are produced

Every acoustic and signal figure here is either derived from a stated formula or taken from a stated source, and the pages show which. That is a deliberate structural choice, because the alternative, an assertion with no derivation, is unfalsifiable and therefore worthless to a reader who wants to check.

The two formulas that carry most of the site are stated on every page that uses them. An axial room mode is the speed of sound divided by twice the room dimension, which puts a 12 foot wall at 47.1 Hz and every whole multiple above it. Buffer latency in milliseconds is the buffer size in samples divided by the sample rate times 1000, which puts a 128 sample buffer at 44.1 kHz at 2.90 ms in one direction. Both are checkable in ten seconds and both are worth checking.

Where a figure is representative rather than exact, the page says so in the table caption. Absorption coefficients vary between manufacturers and mounting methods. Published monitor low frequency specifications are measured at thresholds that differ between brands, which makes cross-brand comparison approximate. Polar pattern behaviour varies between capsule designs. Every one of those is flagged where it appears rather than presented as a measurement, because the difference between a derived number and a typical number matters to anyone actually using it.

And where a specification could not be confirmed, it is omitted. The interface database has visibly missing rows for exactly that reason. A missing row is honest. A guessed one is not, and this audience owns the boxes.

Corrections and contact

If a figure here is wrong, we want to know, and specifically we want to know which figure and what the correct value is. Acoustic and specification data is exactly the kind of thing that goes stale when manufacturers revise a product, and a correction from a reader who owns the box is worth more than another round of desk research.
